Mirax Force is technically one of the best 2D side-scrolling shoot 'em up games for the Atari 8bit home computers. It's beautiful but also almost impossible game to play.

Mirax ForceSTORY / GAMEPLAY
Delta Base to Star Quest - Priority Dispatch - Code Red! Your mission is to fly Star Quest over the Alien mother-ship, destroying everything on sight with the ultimate goal to reach the Main Ship's Reactor. This mission will not be a walk in the park since you also have to evade pylons, buildings and shadowed objects. You will suffer intense attacks from waves of well-equipped Defending Ships protecting the mother-ship! Well, this game is surely a wonderful shoot 'em up that squeezes the Atari 8bit hardware but is as tough as nails as you will easily crash onto an enemy ship or any obstacle found on the mother-ship's surface and this makes Mirax Force quite frustrating.

GRAPHICS / SOUND
When I first played this game I was absolutely amazed by its visuals (especially the explosion effects) and the music. Technically, Mirax Force is surely one of the best for the Atari 8bit home micros. The background details, the smooth sprite animation and the colors make this shoot 'em up a unique experience. The sound is equally good as it has a sampled voice everytime you crash or die and some nice sound effects like explosions and shots. But to enjoy its technical greatness you must be ready to deal with quite loose controls and an absolutely high difficulty level. So be prepared!
